Tree fellingin tight spots, close to houses

When a tree stands right against a house, a wall or a line, it cannot be felled in one piece. Maxime Caradec climbs it on ropes and takes it down piece by piece, each section held on a rope rather than dropped.

    Straight felling

In open ground, the tree is felled in one piece in the chosen direction.

    Sectional dismantling

Maxime climbs on ropes and takes the tree down in pieces, from the crown to the base.

    Dangerous trees

A dead tree, one leaning since a gale, or one resting against another.

    Storm emergencies

An uprooted tree or a branch left hanging: handled 7 days a week, outside the normal schedule.

    Cutting up and removal

The wood is cut up on site, and the branches go through the chipper.

    Stump removal

If you plan to replant, the stump can be ground out straight after, with no digger and no hole to fill.

Price and stump: the concrete answers

How much does tree felling cost?

The method comes first: a tree felled in one piece costs far less than one dismantled in sections above a roof. Then the height, the access and the condition of the wood. The quote follows a site visit, removal included.

What should be done with the stump after felling?

The stump grinder chews it up below ground level, and the price follows the diameter at the root collar. Better to decide this with the felling quote than six months later.

When should a tree be dismantled rather than felled from the base?

Felling a tree in one piece needs a drop zone roughly as long as the tree is tall. In the gardens around Fouesnant, there almost never is one: the house, the neighbour's wall or a power line is too close.

Maxime Caradec then climbs on ropes and cuts short sections starting from the top, and each piece is lowered, held, all the way to the ground. Nothing drops onto the roof or the fence.

A dead tree is climbed differently: its wood breaks without warning. To see what sets the price, a photo sent on WhatsApp to +33 6 58 19 19 32 is often enough for a first opinion.

A tree has fallen on my house in Finistère: what should I do?

A tree that has come down on a house is an emergency: Arb'Ouest takes storm call-outs 7 days a week within 30 km of Fouesnant. Send a WhatsApp message with a photo to +33 6 58 19 19 32. Do not go near the tree, and do not climb onto the roof.

In the meantime: switch off the electricity and the gas if the roof structure is hit, and if an overhead line is caught, call the network operator first. Photograph the tree and the roof for the insurer. Do not cut anything: a trunk under load lets go all at once at the first cut.

Frequently asked questions about sectional tree felling

Everything you need to know before contacting us

When does a tree need to be felled?

    +

When it is dead, dangerous, diseased beyond recovery, or in the way of a building project. Before any felling, Maxime always checks that it is really necessary.

How is a tree felled in a tight space?

    +

Maxime Caradec climbs the tree and lowers the branches, then the trunk sections, on rigging ropes. Each piece is held all the way to the ground, with no impact.

Do I need permission to fell a tree?

    +

It depends on the town and its local urban plan (PLU): a protected wooded area, a protected hedge or a protected tree requires a prior declaration to the town hall (mairie). The rule changes from one plot to the next, so it is checked with you before the quote.

What happens to the wood after felling?

    +

You keep whatever you want: logs, chippings, trunks. Say so before the job. The rest is put to use: branches chipped, wood cut into logs, good trunks sent to a local sawmill.

A tree is leaning: does it have to be felled?

    +

Not always. What is worrying is a recent tilt, soil coming away at the base or ground heaving on the opposite side. When it does have to come down, a leaning tree is dismantled in sections held on ropes, so that it is never left to choose its own direction.
