Fruit tree plantingThe right tree, in the right place, at the right season

A badly planted tree costs you for twenty years. A species unsuited to salt wind, a hole that is too small, a buried root collar: the three most common causes of failure by the sea can all be avoided. We plant what will hold here.

    Choosing the species

Cider apples, pears, plums: we select varieties that cope with salt wind and the sandy soils of the coast around Fouesnant.

    Preparing the soil

A hole three times wider than the root ball, soil loosened deep down. This unseen work decides whether the tree takes.

    Planting at the right depth

The root collar must stay level with the ground. A buried collar slowly chokes the tree, and the symptom only shows years later.

    Staking and protection

A low stake set facing the prevailing wind, with protection against deer and rodents where the setting calls for it.

    Mulch from our own jobs

The chippings from our pruning work become mulch: they limit evaporation, feed the soil and spare you weeding at the foot.

    Follow-up in the first year

One visit in the first year to adjust the staking, check the watering and correct whatever needs correcting.

The three mistakes that doom a tree at planting

The wrong species. A tree chosen without regard for salt wind, sandy soil or the water table declines without anyone understanding why. Between Beg-Meil and Saint-Évarzec, the list of viable species already changes.

The hole that is too small. Dug to the size of the root ball, it traps the roots, which circle and strangle themselves. Allow three times the width of the root ball.

The buried root collar. The junction between trunk and roots must stay level with the ground. Buried, it rots slowly, and the symptom sometimes appears five years later.

Planting with the grown tree in mind

A maiden whip one and a half metres tall looks harmless against a wall. At fifteen, it lifts the patio, darkens a window and overhangs the neighbour. So the grown size, legal distances, buried networks and shade over the vegetable patch are all looked at before digging.

Planting takes place from November to March, during the quiet season for pruning: the tree’s calendar fits well with ours.

Why have an arborist plant your tree?

    Species suited to the coast

What grows inland does not necessarily hold at Beg-Meil.

    Planting in season

November to March, outside frosty spells: the only window that gives the tree its best chance.

    An arborist’s eye

We plant with the grown tree in mind, not the young plant in its pot.

    Mulch included

    Advice on where to plant

Legal distances, cast shade, buried networks, the view kept clear.

Frequently asked questions about fruit tree planting

Everything you need to know before contacting us

When is the best time to plant a fruit tree?

    +

From November to March, outside frosty spells. A dormant tree has several months to grow roots before the first warm days. Planted in April, it will suffer from the first dry summer.

Which species stand up to the seaside?

    +

Cider apples and some hardy pears and plums cope with salt wind, provided they are sheltered from the prevailing wind in their first years. The further from the coast, the wider the choice.

How far from the property boundary can I plant?

    +

Article 671 of the French Civil Code requires 2 metres for a planting that will grow taller than 2 metres, and 0.5 metres for the others, unless local rules say otherwise. A full-size fruit tree is therefore planted at least 2 metres away.

Does a newly planted tree need watering?

    +

Yes, generously and rarely, for the first two summers. Better 30 litres once a week than 5 litres every day: the water has to go down to where the roots are heading.

    Do you supply the trees?

    +

Yes, or we plant the ones you have chosen. Either way, variety and size are discussed before buying: a young maiden whip often takes better than a large tree, and catches up with it within a few years.
