    Tree pruningand sympathetic pruning

Here, pruning is sympathetic: as little as possible is removed, and the tree holds. Maxime Caradec, who holds the CS TSA (French national specialist certificate in tree pruning and care, 2014), works across South Finistère.

Professional services tailored to your needs

    Sympathetic pruning

Every cut is made back to a branch that can take over, where the tree is able to close the wound.

    Formative pruning

On a young tree, the main framework is guided to avoid weak forks later on.

    Safety pruning

Deadwood, a split branch, a stub above a path: whatever could fall is removed.

    Crown reduction

Lowering the height and the wind load without breaking the outline of the tree.

    Crown lifting

Raising the low branches so you can walk underneath, or to bring light back to a terrace.

    Maintenance pruning

A visit every few years costs less than reworking a tree that has been left to grow unchecked.

Price and season: the concrete answers

How much does tree pruning cost?

Three criteria set the price: the height of the tree, the access to its base and the volume of wood to take away. Above 10 m, climbing on ropes changes the scale of the job. Removal of the branches is included.

In which month should a tree be pruned?

Outside frost and outside the spring rise of sap, so mainly between November and March around Fouesnant. A seaside pine and an old oak do not follow the same calendar: Maxime Caradec looks at the species before setting the date.

Sympathetic pruning: what comes off, what stays?

Sympathetic pruning means removing as little as possible: deadwood, broken branches, and those that threaten a roof or a path. The main framework and the outline stay. A hard cut empties the tree, which comes back the following year as a burst of poorly attached shoots.

Too tall, too much shade on the terrace, a fallen branch, a neighbour complaining: none of these reasons means the tree has to be cut hard. Maxime Caradec, who has held the CS TSA since 2014, looks at what the tree can take before saying what he will remove.

You do not need to be there on the day: the garden is left clean. For a first opinion, send a photo of the tree on WhatsApp to +33 6 58 19 19 32.

Why does Arb'Ouest refuse to top trees?

Arb'Ouest refuses to top trees, even when the client asks for it. Cutting off the crown triggers numerous, poorly anchored shoots, opens wounds the tree cannot close and lets decay in. Cheaper on the day, topping then means reworking the tree every two or three years.

A tree too big for its spot is not condemned. A crown reduction, crown lifting above a roof or cabling deal with the same problem. When none of that is enough, sectional felling is proposed.

    Never topping

Cutting the top off a tree condemns it slowly

    The season matters

Broadleaves from November to March, fruit trees at the end of winter

    Less regrowth

A well-placed cut does not trigger water shoots

Frequently asked questions about tree pruning & sympathetic pruning

Everything you need to know before contacting us

When is the best time to prune a tree?

    +

It depends on the species. Late winter suits most trees, but birch and maple, which bleed sap in spring, are better pruned in summer.

How much does tree pruning cost?

    +

It depends on the height, the access and the work to be done: reducing a crown above a roof is not priced like pruning a fruit tree. Quote after a site visit, removal included.

What is the difference between pruning and topping?

    +

Topping cuts the crown off flush with the trunk. Sympathetic pruning removes deadwood and reduces the crown following the tree's own structure. Only the second is practised here.

Do you work on all kinds of trees?

    +

Yes: oaks, pines, limes, maples, fruit trees, conifers, hedges. The species, age and condition of the tree decide how it is pruned.
