Tree cablingsecure it rather than fell it

A fork that is starting to open never closes again on its own, but the tree is not lost. Cabling links the main limbs with a flexible strap that takes up the load when the wind pushes.

Price, qualification, emergencies: the concrete answers

How much does it cost to cable a tree?

The price of cabling depends on the diameter of the tree and the number of anchor points. The quote follows a site visit, travel included. Allow about fifteen days before fitting, and a month between December and February.

    Who fits the cabling?

Maxime Caradec, a climbing arborist who has held the CS TSA (French national specialist certificate in tree pruning and care) since 2014. A cable carries the safety of a tree you are keeping: it is an arborist’s job.

Should a tree split by a storm be cabled or felled?

That is decided in front of the tree, not over the phone. Storm emergencies are handled 7 days a week, within 30 km of Fouesnant.

When a cable is the right answer, and when it is not

A cable links two parts of the framework so that if one breaks, it does not take the other with it. It repairs nothing; it holds.

It is fitted on a trunk that divides low into two limbs of equal strength, with included bark at the bottom of the fork. Also on a heavy limb that is starting to open, or on a multi-stemmed tree where one stem leans out a little further each year.

It is useless on a trunk that is hollow along its whole height, since the load-bearing wood is missing, and on a dead tree. When the doubt is about the tree's health rather than its mechanics, the assessment comes before fitting.

Frequently asked questions about tree cabling

Everything you need to know before contacting us

When should a cable be fitted?

    +

Cabling is recommended when a tree is at risk of breaking but remains viable: weak forks, multiple stems, heavy limbs, trees leaning after a storm.

    How long does cabling last?

    +

A cable is checked once a year: is the strap marking the bark, is the tension holding, has the fork moved? How long it actually lasts depends on the hardware, the species and how fast the tree grows.

    Does cabling damage the tree?

    +

No. The strap goes around the main limbs without squeezing, and it moves with the tree instead of locking it. Nothing is drilled, nothing is screwed into the wood.

How much does tree cabling cost?

    +

It depends on the diameter of the trunk and the number of anchor points to fit. A fork opening by two centimetres and a fork already split do not need the same system, hence the visit before the quote.
